The red shouldered hawk's name reflects its reddish colored shoulders. It also has red feathers lining its wings and on its underside, as well as white barring on wings and narrow white bands on its tail.

The red shouldered hawk is found primarily in the eastern half of the United States.

These birds are often found near streams in the moist woodlands and in swamps. They eat snakes, frogs, mice, lizards and crayfish, and capture their prey in short pounces from low perches.
