As the name indicates, this large bird of prey lives throughout Africa except for parts of South Africa and Namibia, Eastern Somalia, and in the equatorial forests in West Africa. It is the most abundant type of vulture.

The typical African white-backed vulture has a wingspan of six feet and weighs 30 to 36 pounds.

The African white-backed vulture prefers savannahs and open woodlands and likes to nest in tall trees near rivers. It soars overhead, searching for carcasses of dead animals. Occasionally it kills its own prey, but it mostly relies on scavenging from animals that are already dead.
